Corfu Scene Corfu is a Greek island in the Ionian Sea off the north-western coast of mainland Greece. From medieval times and into the 17th century, the island was used by the Venetians to defend against Ottoman intrusion into the Adriatic. The 1797 Treaty of Campo Formio saw Corfu ceded to the French, who occupied it for two years until they were expelled by a joint Russian-Ottoman alliance. For a short time it became the capital of a self-governing federation of the Heptanesos ("Seven Islands"), under Ottoman suzerainty. Following the final defeat of Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo, the Ionian Islands became a protectorate of the United Kingdom by the Treaty of Paris in 1815. In 1864, the United Kingdom, Greece, France and Russia signed the Treaty of London, pledging the transfer of sovereignty to Greece which saw the Ionian Islands united with Greece.
